South Carolina News

South Carolina is taking steps to join the Northeast Compact and close its Barnwell disposal facility to all states but Connecticut and New Jersey. South Carolina pulled out of the Southeast Compact in 1995 because North Carolina failed too open a new regional facility to replace Barnwell. After leaving that eight-state compact, South Carolina began accepting waste from all over the country. Currently, 39 states ship low-level radioactive waste to the repository in Barnwell County. At current disposal rates, the Barnwell facility would reach capacity within about 12 years. By joining the Northeast Compact, the state will be able to restrict disposal to waste from Connecticut, New Jersey, and South Carolina, extending the life of the facility by at least 50 years.

South Carolina has received approval for an upgraded non-point source management program. Program approval is awarded to any state that has taken steps and addressed nine key elements of an effective NPS program. This approval makes them eligible for Clean Water Act Section 319 grant funds.
