In March the Atlanta Regional Commission approved a regional transportation plan. The plan will be submitted to the Federal Transit Administration and the Federal Highway Administration. These Agencies will send the Plan to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for comments. The EPA will make recommendations and resubmit it to the Agencies. The transportation Agencies then will decide if the plan should be approved.
The plan calls for investing $36 billion over 25 years in transportation projects. These projects include passenger rail, light rail, subway system, bus services, vehicle lanes, bicycle paths and sidewalks. The goal is to reduce the number of single-passenger cars on the road. This plan also will enhance mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and improve the quality of air in Atlanta.
Recent Clean Air Act litigation had shut down a number of road construction projects in the Atlanta area.
