Process
Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals (HHC) is OSHA
standard 29 CFR 1910.119. It is intended to prevent or minimize
the consequences of a catastrophic release of a HHC from a process.
The Process Safety Management (PSM) of Highly Hazardous Chemicals
(HHC's) standard aims at preventing or minimizing the effects
of a release of toxic, reactive, flammable, or explosive HHC's
from a process.
Process Safety Components
- Process Safety Information: Written information on HHC's
technology and equipment of processes.
- Employee Involvement: Written plan of action of employee
participation.
- Training: Employees operating a process.
- Contractors: Responsibilities of all working on or near
a process.
Mechanical Integrity: Written procedures for process equipment.
- Hot Work: Permits issued for hot work operations on or
near process.
- Management of Change: Written procedures to manage change.
- Incident Investigation: No later that 48 hours and written
reports.
Exceptions
The standard does not apply to retail facilities. It mainly applies
to unoccupied remote facilities, oil or gas well drilling and
service activities.

Process is defined as any activity or combination of activities
including any use, storage, manufacturing, handling, or on-site
movement of highly hazardous chemicals. |
